Why I Chose to Birth my Baby at Home By: Whitney Colm

“Whenever and however you give birth, your experience will impact your emotions, your mind, your body, and your spirit for the rest of your life.” -Ina May Gaskin

I was fortunate to be let in on a secret that only a small percentage of pregnant moms are aware of...years before I got pregnant with my first baby. A different experience is possible than what is shown on TV and what is the routine procedures that are offered at most OBs practices.

Birth is magical. Pregnancy is a sacred, divine connection to another soul. I was lucky to know and learn from women who considered birth to be a healthy, normal, biological and spiritual process.

I started my first chiropractic practice in a small studio down the hall from a midwife and doula office, which we eventually moved together and opened a collaborative birth center. I got the privilege of being mentored by Kristine- a spunky, warrior midwife, who sees women as strong and capable. She took me under her wing and taught me the real truth about birth, as it was designed to be - sacred. I would sit with her often, listening to her stories of birthing mommas, and asking her All. The. Questions. She called me to the birth room many times to adjust a laboring momma who needed a little help progressing naturally.  I learned that home birth is often much safer than hospital birth, because midwives are extensively trained to honor the natural processes and ancient wisdom of the female body.

I was also trained to support laboring women by master doula, Brenda. I had the honor of attending (as a doula) numerous friend’s and client’s births in hospitals, homes and at birth centers.

When I got pregnant with Ella, I knew about birth...from an on-looker’s perspective. I was excited that it was finally my time for first-hand experience. I knew without a doubt I wanted to give birth at home unless there was truly an emergency.

I went into labor 3 days past my due date during a powerful acupuncture session. It felt like my body was “plugged in” to an energy I had never felt before, I started feeling downward pressure throughout my entire body- and I knew that it wouldn’t be much longer until I met my little babe.

I came to know a deeply spiritual energy through the process of labor and birth. It’s as if I was transported to another dimension, with my midwife there to guide me and hold space for my journey into motherhood. Time did not exist, all that mattered was my presence with the sensations in my body and energetic dance of communication with my baby. Each wave of energy that passed through my body required me to completely surrender to do its work. The process of pushing for over 3 hours was intensely painful and humbling. Not only did I birth my baby, I birthed myself into a mother. The confidence and strength I realized from my birth have forever transformed me.

I learned that labor is a sacred dance between a mother’s soul and the soul of the child who chose her. I am forever grateful that I was able to tap into sacred birth space, and plan to birth my future children at home.

If you are exploring the idea of a home or birth center birth, here are some resources and tips I recommend:

  1. Read books by Ina May Gaskin. I recommend “Ina May’s Guide to Childbirth” or “Spiritual Midwifery”

  2. Interview local midwives and trust your intuition in choosing the best fit for your needs (I interviewed more than 10!)

  3. Meet with and consider hiring a doula (no matter where you choose to birth)- they are SO worth it!

  4. Take care of yourself during pregnancy. I did prenatal yoga, acupuncture, massage, chiropractic adjustments, energy healing, sound healing, and ate very healthy meals throughout. Treat Yo’ Self, Momma! You deserve it.
